Special Education at BXHS

Special Education at Brady Exploration High School

The special education program at Brady is designed to meet the unique needs of students with learning differences and disabilities. The program includes direct instruction, co-teaching, consultation, and materials modification as identified on the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).  Direct instruction is used to provide explicit and systematic instruction in academic and functional skills. Our teachers use evidence-based strategies to teach students with disabilities, such as multi-sensory instruction, graphic organizers, and visual supports. Direct instruction is provided in small groups or one-on-one to ensure that students receive individualized attention and support.

Co-teaching is another important component of Brady’s special education program. Our SPED teachers work collaboratively with general education teachers to provide inclusive instruction to students with IEPs. Co-teaching allows students with disabilities to learn alongside their non-disabled peers and participate in the general education curriculum. Our co-teaching model includes a variety of approaches, such as parallel teaching, station teaching, and team teaching. Consultation is also provided to support teachers in implementing effective instructional strategies and accommodations for students with disabilities. Our special education teachers collaborate with general education teachers, counselors, related service providers, and families to ensure that students receive the appropriate supports and services to meet their individual needs. Materials modification is also provided to ensure that students with disabilities have access to the general education curriculum. Our special education and general education teachers modify materials, such as textbooks, worksheets, and assessments, to make them accessible to students with disabilities. This may include providing alternative formats, such as audio or digital materials, paper print outs of digital materials, or simplifying language and content to make it more understandable.
